Physical Developer

Post by Peter Griffin »

Does anyone know of a validated detergent solution for PD that does not use N-Dodecylamine acetate or Synperonic N? I would rather make it than use the commercial solutions, but i can only find the N-Dodecylamine acetate from two smaller companies that I don’t fully trust. One has a price that seems almost too good (~$65 for 100g) and the other ridiculously high (~$100 for 5g). I also can’t find Synperonic N, but variants of it such as Synperonic A7, Synperonic NP10, Synperonic NP30, etc. I would like to go with reagents that I can find from Sigma-Aldrich. Everything else (silver nitrate, ferric nitrate, ferrous ammonium sulfate, and citric acid) is not a problem, but these two reagents are proving difficult.
Does anyone know what the FBI uses?
Thanks
PG

I have read that Synperonic-N is no longer being made, at least in Europe. I have not read any articles that explore alternatives for use in physical developer, though. A web search will turn up articles on the subject, but here's a link to an abstract of one http://www.jstor.org/pss/3179851.
