Lockerbie Appeal Can Continue

Jim Swire has found out that he, as an interested party, can appeal to the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) regarding the conviction and Miscarriage of Justice re: Megrahi the alleged Lockerbie Bomber.

What a right slap in the face this must be for the Scottish Government who bent over backwards to get Megrahi to drop his appeal:

‘Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to open an independent inquiry into the 2001 Kamp van Zeist conviction of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi for the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 in December 1988.’

On the 22nd December 1988 a terrorist outrage was perpetrated over Lockerbie, Scotland, that robbed 270 souls of their lives.

190 were American citizens and 43 British subjects and 37 victims originated from 19 other countries.

Regardless of what you believe about Lockerbie there appears little doubt that successive governments at home and abroad, including the UK and American, have lied and procrastinated and effectively hidden the truth. All have professed to seek the truth - all have done everything in their power to avoid it.

As with the Fingerprint Inquiry I believe that our Scottish Government has a duty to seek out the truth about this horrendous crime that occurred on Scottish soil and was investigated and prosecuted by Scottish authorities.

Libya’s ex-justice minister claims he has evidence that Moammar Gadhafi personally ordered the Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people in 1988, according to a Swedish newspaper. Expressen on Wednesday quoted Mustafa Abdel-Jalil as telling their correspondent in Libya that “I have proof that Gadhafi gave the order about Lockerbie.” He didn’t describe the proof. Abdel-Jalil stepped down as justice minister to protest the violence against anti-government demonstrations.

He told Expressen that Gadhafi gave the order to Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only man convicted in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed all 259 people on board and 11 on the ground. “To hide it, he (Gadhafi) did everything in his power to get al-Megrahi back from Scotland,” Abdel-Jalil was quoted as saying. Al-Megrahi was granted a compassionate release from a Scottish prison in August 2009 on the grounds that he was suffering from prostate cancer and would die soon. He is still alive.

Expressen spokeswoman Alexandra Forslund said its reporter, Kassem Hamade, interviewed the ex-justice minister at “a local parliament in a large city in Libya.” She didn’t want to name the city, citing security concerns.

Gadhafi has been trying to bring his country out of isolation, announcing in 2003 that he was abandoning his program for weapons of mass destruction and renouncing terrorism. New documents released today show the United Kingdom’s Labour party pushed for the release of the Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset Al-Megrahi because it jeopardized a large oil deal.
