Photoshop GYRO

Ray Forensics has developed Adobe Photoshop actions to make the comparison of latent fingerprints more complete and efficient.

Download a copy of the Adobe actions file here:

If you're not familiar with Actions, they're a way of automating processes that are somewhat repetitive. I have a Nin one, one for sizing for WIN/NEC searches, and unsharp mask one, etc...

In order to use Eric's action, after downloading it, put it somewhere you can find it (I have a folder on my hard drive for Adobe Actions). Then open your actions panel (Window>Actions). There are some default actions in there that you don't need. You can get rid of them by selecting the actions panel, clicking the flyout-button on the upper right corner. Uncheck "Button Mode" and then drag and drop the default actions group into the panel's garbage can.

Then go back to the flyout-button and select the "Load Actions" option. Then navigate to the folder where the downloaded action is stored, and then select it.

If you want to make your own actions, back around the days of Photoshop CS2, I wrote a tutorial (which includes trashing the default actions), and it looks like it exists here: https://www.iapsonline.com/sites/defaul ... verist.pdf For the most part, the process is similar, but some UI differences may exist.

Thanks Steve. In my rush to get ready for the conference I forgot to post the full instructions. Examiners can contact me at Rayforensics.com if you have any issues installing it using these actions.

GYRO ACTIONS

To install the GYRO actions:
- Launch Photoshop and choose Windows > Actions.
- Click on the flyout panel (three lines in upper right) and choose Load Actions.
- Select GYRO.atn from wherever you saved the file.

To use the GYRO actions:
- Ensure that the latent (or exemplar) image that you will be marking is the currently selected file in Photoshop.
- Press F4.
- The Enhancement Layer will be selected and you can now make adjustments and enhancements to that layer of the image. The original image will remain unchanged in the background layer. (If you change the Image Mode, this will still affect the background layer.)
- Press F5 for a green point, and then click on the image to place a green point.
- Press F6 for a yellow point, and then click on the image to place a yellow point.
- Press F7 for a red point, and then click on the image to place a red point.
- Press F8 for a orange point, and then click on the image to place a orange point.
- In the Layers tab, you can turn on and off all minutiae of one color by clicking on the "eye" icon to the left of the layer folders Green GYRO, Yellow GYRO, Red GYRO, and Orange GYRO.
- IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not click on any of the layers whose name begins with "Layer".
- IMPORTANT NOTE: If your latent and exemplar images are in different files, you must select the file (e.g. click on the name of the image at the top of the file) before pressing F5, F6, F7, or F8.

To move a GYRO point:
- Press V.
- Click once on the point that you would like to move.
- Click and hold on the point and move the mouse.
- Release mouse click.

GYRO actions are preset with these specific four colors and a brush diameter of 12.

To adjust GYRO colors:
- Choose Window > Actions.
- Expand the GYRO folder and expand the tool that you want to change (e.g. Green GYRO).
- Select the Set Foreground Color action.
- Click the Record button (circle) at the bottom of the Actions tab.
- Choose your new color from the Swatches tab or by clicking on the Foreground Color selector, choosing your new color, and clicking OK.
- Click the Stop button (square) at the bottom of the Actions tab.
- Re-Select the old Set Foreground Color action.
- Click the Delete button (trash can) at the bottom of the Actions tab.

To adjust GYRO point size:
- Select the Pencil tool on the toolbar.
- Choose Window > Actions.
- Expand the GYRO folder and expand the tool that you want to change (e.g. Green GYRO).
- Select the Set current brush action.
- Click the Record button (circle) at the bottom of the Actions tab.
- Click the down arrow next to the brush diameter circle (tool panel just underneath Edit menu).
- Change the Size to your new diameter.
- Click the Stop button (square) at the bottom of the Actions tab.
- Re-Select the old Set current brush action.
- Click the Delete button (trash can) at the bottom of the Actions tab.

One more tip here.
If you have an older version of Photoshop, these still should work. However, you may have an issue trying to move the points. To solve this, select the move tool (V), then look up at the top near the tool bar for an option to "Auto-Select". Then that tool should work great.

Keep an eye out here and at RayForensics.com for more tools coming soon for exemplars and for an adaptation of these actions to drop down lollipops instead of dots (which can then be used for FRStat).
