Marking minutiae with direction tails in Photoshop

Post by ER »

Most latent print examiners using Adobe Photoshop are limited to only marking the minutiae points, while most AFIS software allows marking both the location and direction of the minutiae.

This video shows how to adapt Photoshop to easily mark both minutiae location and direction while also still utilizing the GYRO system to mark your confidence in each minutiae point.

This should be especially useful for examiners testing out FRStat. That software requires marking a point and a line. This tool makes that super easy and efficient.

Tested with Photoshop CC 2017. It may not operate in the same manner with other versions of Photoshop.

ER, are you changing the annotation colors prior to running in FRStat? I know we can use any color except red and I understand it may actually be partial to blue. I was just wondering if you were making the GYRO markings all one particular color prior to running it.

When I asked Henry, he said that any color or mix of colors would work as long as they weren't pure red (255,0,0). I'll test it out today or early next week to be sure, but that is my current understanding.

Hello Folks

Just curious and I have not played with it yet but why not pure red? Specific reason?

Cheers All

The software doesn't play well with red. It has to be able to detect the minutiae locations and directions and it doesn't like red. I can't give you a more technical answer than that. Per the manual, you also have to first convert the image to grayscale and then back to RGB to ensure that the only pixels with color information are from the annotations.
