Processing Pottery for prints

Post by jdelaney208 »

We received what appears to be a handmade clay pot for latent print processing. Will you share with me your thoughts on what chemicals to use?

All but the base is glazed light gray. The glazed areas have a slight sheen. I’m going to start with Lumicyano, our one-step chemical similar to conventional CA + dye.

The base is where I have questions. I believe it’s fired clay but not glazed. It looks like they fired the pot, then released it from the oven using string, which leaves the clay looking raw – a yellow tan. I’m thinking porous chemicals – indanedione or DFO, then ninhydrin?

The whole pot’s been powdered already by the person who collected it from scene.
