Quick Administrative Update

Post by Steve Everist »

A few months ago increasing spam was making it into posts on the board. So Kasey stepped things up so that all applications for registration on the board would have to be approved by an administrator. Since the board requires registration for posting or replying to posts, anyone with the time to register and post spam won't be able to until their registration is approved.

We're still getting a huge number of bot pre-registrations, so I thought I'd check and see how long it would to take to get to 100 of them. It took about two weeks. Of the 102 pre-registration emails I've received since March 4th, only 7 have been legitimate. The rest were all bots/spammers.

Some of the different steps that have previously been implemented have cut down the number of bot registrations too. At one point I wasn't surprised to see as many as 10-20 in a day. At this point, the average is just over 7 per day. Each pre-registration sends and email out to the administrators who must look into the registrations to see if they look legit. Usually it's pretty obvious when they're not, but occasionally there are some that could be questionable and take a little more searching. At this point, although not being ideal, we've found a way to keep most of the spam from getting through.

Also, for those who have registered in the past and may have forgotten their password, just shoot an email to me and I can get it taken care of.
