DUTIES: This position examines and compares for identification forensic evidence related to latent fingerprints employing physical, microscopic, chemical, photographic and instrumental techniques. Assures proper procedures are applied by researching new techniques and reviewing forensic literature, maintains scientific instrument and photographic equipment, and writes standard operating procedures and training manuals. Completes quality assurance measures required in the Fingerprint Section. Communicates with attorneys, law enforcement officers, co-workers, and citizens in regard to evidence collected, testing employed, and interpretation of results. Testifies in courts of law as a forensic expert witness. Responds to requests for assistance at crime scenes. Evaluates the crime scene, protects, gathers, secures, and transports physical evidence which may be hazardous, complex, perishable, or valuable in nature. Instructs and supervises law enforcement officers regarding the significance of various types of physical evidence and proper evidence collection procedures. Maintains proficiency in firearms use and safety through training and qualification on an approved Colorado Bureau of Investigation tactical combat course.
REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in criminalistics, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, physics, forensic science or a field related to the work assignment plus ONE YEAR of current concentrated effort in processing evidence for latent prints and comparison of latent prints with or without supervision. This experience must be demonstrated and documented in your application. Your work experience must be specific and clearly stated on your application with the amount of time spent on task. Applicants must be willing to pursue IAI latent print examiner certification at the end of training. Applicants must also be willing to pursue training, and eventually certification, in footwear. Applicants with shoe and tire track impression training or experience will be given preference. There are physical demands of this job that include: vision, hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling to mention a few. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have a valid Colorado Driver's License or obtain one upon employment. Applicants must be willing to be fingerprinted, successfully pass a polygraph and an extensive background investigation. If you have used any illegal drugs within the past 3 years or been convicted of DUI, DWAI, DUID within the past 3 years (the 3 year timeframe is from date of conviction to date of initial application), been convicted of a felony or domestic violence or you do not meet these requirements for this position, you will be disqualified and will not be hired.
NOTE: If the position is entitled to overtime pay, the applicant must be willing to accept compensatory time in lieu of overtime pay.

Applicants must be IAI certified latent fingerprint examiners. Applicants must be willing to pursue IAI certification in footwear. Applicants with shoe and tire track impression training or experience will be given preference.

APPEAL RIGHTS: Your application will be reviewed by a qualified Human Resource Specialist to determine if you meet the minimum position requirements. If your application does not demonstrate that you meet the minimum requirements, you will not be considered for the vacancy. You will be notified of the results of the application review. If there are questions related to your qualifications meeting the minimum requirements, your application will be reviewed by a different qualified Human Resource Specialist. If your application is rejected you may contact this office to attempt to resolve any questions you may have concerning your qualifications. You must contact this office within 5 days from the date of notice of rejection of your application. If you still do not agree with our decision concerning your qualifications, you have the right to have your application rejection reviewed by the State Personnel Director.
