Error Types

Does anyone know or have an idea on when the terms Type 1 Error and Type 2 Error first came into the fingerprint discipline.

I know it was used in other scientific disciplines but I am trying to find the original (or close to) source or article of its use in Fingerprints (Latent Prints).

Thanks

I'm just guessing, but considering the terms come from statstics background and deal with variance analysis that you'll find their first appearance related to fingerprints around the time that AFIS systems and matching algorithms are being proposed. I would also guess you will find their first appearance as a reference to False Acceptance Rate and False Rejection Rate.

If you can get copies of these publications you might be able to back track to their origins via the references

Z. R. Li and D. P. Zhang, A Fingerprint Recognition System With Micro-Computer, Proc. 6th ICPR, Montreal, 1984

G. Stockman, S. Kopstein and S. Benett, Matching Images to Models for Registration and Object Detection via Clustering. IEEE Trans. on PAMI, Vol. 4, No. 3, 1982.

I got these two sources from the reference section of the paper here http://researchweb.watson.ibm.com/ecvg/ ... t-proc.pdf titled An Identity Authentication System Using Fingerprints

Hope it helps!
