Enough to identify?

Is anyone aware of any research that has been done into how much, or how little ridge detail is required to identify?

Dan,
That really depends on what information you’re using to make an ID. Some people quantify sufficiency just using Galton points (lots of statistical models on that) while others are using level 1, 2, and 3 details.
If you’re using them all, then it depends on how you define each detail (in addition to the quality, quantity, and rarity of each detail). Some people consider incipients to be level 2 details and others think they are level 3 details. If you consider incipient to be level 3 details then one could say that zero level two details are needed to establish identification.
