prints recovered on adhesive side of tape

I have processed the adhesive side of several lengths of duct tape. I haven't worked with tape much, but I am finding several mirror reversals. It appears that the prints were deposited on the smooth side of the tape and "stuck" reversed on the sticky side as I unwound it. Is that the norm for others?
