On a somewhat amusing note a Livescan set of tenprints came in last week with all ten fingers and palms missing. When the print taker (a serving sworn Police Officer) was telephoned and queried over the matter he replied that the subject was a double amputee so he took the 'prints' anyway because his superior officer told him to !!!!! What the ?

On a separate matter a print taker took a set of Livescan prints but one of the fingers was amputed which he forgot to declare. When it came time the print taker realised he was one finger short and the Livescan device wouldn't let him go on without taking a print - so guess what he did next - yes you guessed it - he rolled his own finger in the absent spot and then sequence bypassed the system to force it through !!!! What the........ and when phoned to communicate his faux pas the print taker did not appreciate what his error was - so much so that the very same thing happended the following week from the same print taker !!! What the ?

We recently had a phone call from an officer wanting to know how to submit a suspect for comparison to the latents in one of his cases.
He was told to put the case and the suspect's details in an email and send it to us.
Nothing arrived in our inbox all afternoon.
Next morning we received an envelope through internal snailmail. Yep! It contained a printout of an email from the officer with all the info we needed.

Recently the DNA folks and I were asked to examine a vehicle from a fatality accident. This was a work truck with a number of drivers, and definitely not the cleanest truck on the road. You already know where this is going, don't you? We are supposed to "prove" who was driving at the time of the crash. I got a bunch of latents from the driver's door (inside and out), the driver's seat belt buckle, etc. (rearview mirrors all broken/lost in the wreck). DNA got at least four profiles off the steering wheel (no air bag). We have almost a dozen "suspects" and I have excluded every suspect from every latent print. Now the prosecutor is getting frantic. DNA is rushing the case, but even if they get a match or two or four, how will that "prove" who was driving at the time of the wreck? I'm sure everybody in this business has had this situation. It happens here several times year. Don't these accident investigators and prosecutors understand anything about forensic evidence? Personally, I hope DNA matches all four profiles and all four then claim to have been driving at the time of the wreck. Let the prosecutor sort that one out!

US man Mark Smith arrested after allegedly trying to rob bank

A BANK robber was convinced by staff to sit down and arrange a loan to help his financial problems.

Mark Smith, 59, allegedly told bank workers in Watsonville California, that he had a bomb in his backpack and that he would detonate it inside the building unless he was given $2000.

But instead, Mr Smith was convinced by the bank manager to take a loan from the branch to solve his cash flow problems.

While Mr Smith waited patiently for the her to retrieve loan paperwork, the manager simply called emergency services.

"Quick-thinking staff kept the man calm and distracted him with some paperwork until we arrived' Lieutenant Darren Thompson told the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Police arrested Mr Smith on suspicion of attempted robbery, as well as charges of making a false bomb report.

Mr Smith was not carrying weapons of any kind, Lieut Thompson added.

Crook blew himself up trying to torch stolen car to hide fingerprints

A JOYRIDER got severe burns after a car exploded when he set it on fire to hide his fingerprints.

Sean Jacques, 21, who accepted a lift from a friend who had taken the £12,000 motor, was blown 20ft in the air, Newcastle crown court heard yesterday.

Giving him a two-year community order after ­admitting arson and being carried in a stolen car, Judge Guy Whitburn told him: “You are a very stupid young man.”

Did you hear about the one mite on one leaf in a shipment of apples that ended up in Sth Australia it appears they are so upset they want all apple exports banned from NZ, I say we will swap that one mite fly for a million oposums that have stripped our Kauri forests and whatever wallabies and red back spiders they can find. I believe the red backs arrived here in Holden cars, should we ban all imports of Holdens? What the!!!

Man Busted for Marijuana After Petting K-9

If you have marijuana in your pocket, it's not a good idea to pet a patrolling police dog.

The Binghamton Press & Sun Bulletin reports that 48-year-old Kelly Simpson was busted Wednesday after he stopped to pet K-9 Tarah, who was on foot patrol with her handler in Endicott.

Police say Tarah smelled marijuana and alerted the officer.

Simpson was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, and released on an appearance ticket.

I am truly disgusted at what has just transpired over the ditch at the world cup first semi final. I fear the great rugby spectacle is diminishing because the game's most important person is the referee.

As a completely neutral observer with no ties to either team I feel gutted for the Welsh. Only one team turned up to play 'rugby' and their game plan was sabotaged when they were sadly let down by the referee - clearly referee Alain Rolain's ego got in the way and yet again in this world cup I feel the referee has totally ruined the game. I especially like the parts where Rolain was heard on the mike's talking in fluent French to the French forwards. The Welsh should be proud I guess- I mean 16 vs 14 never works does it.

Only the south African ref for tomorrow's game has done anything right this world cup (ie the Welsh Irish game when you didn't even know he was there).

The only thing worse than the ref's send off of the welsh captain was the 'insult to my backside' to have to sit and listen to the sideline commentary from ex Wallaby Rod Kefer and comm team of Phil Kearns and Greg Martin- at one point in the 2nd half I hit the mute button on the remote. Seriously, how do I get the Kiwi commentators for tomorrow's game - short of jumping on a plane that is? (Fox sports are good - in the game oz vs South Africa I listened in Afrikaan so as not to listen to them.)

I wonder if the Salt Lake City Tabernacle Choir were to do an impromptu performance at the gates of the RWC when USA played one of their games if they would be pepper sprayed? Mind you the bagpipes were band when the Scots played.

But at the end of the day we got the cup and the French played a great game they can be proud of their team.
