JOB INFORMATION:
Latent Print Examiner I positions perform routine examinations of latent finger, palm and foot prints to determine quality and identity; perform routine work in the comparison of known prints of suspects with latent prints; prepare and enter latent prints into an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS/IAFIS); prepare digital photographs, charts and other materials for presentation of evidence in court; testify in court; maintain logs and records of examinations performed; and perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.
EDUCATION: You must meet ONE of the following options:
1. Completion of 80 hours of training/course work on fingerprint or latent print identification and comparison by a recognized law enforcement agency, P.O.S.T., F.B.I., Department of Justice or a recognized professional institute.
2. Associate’s Degree in Forensic Technology (formerly Evidence Technology) that includes course work in basic fingerprinting and advanced fingerprinting.
3. Certificate in Forensic Technology that includes college level course work in basic fingerprinting and advanced fingerprinting.
4. Bachelor’s Degree in a physical science.
EXPERIENCE: You must meet ONE of the following options:
1. One year of full-time experience performing specialized identification of fingerprints using Cal-ID or similar automated fingerprint identification system.
2. 500 hours of experience (volunteer or intern experience is acceptable) in a latent print department setting performing fingerprint analysis or comparison.
3. One year of full-time experience identifying, collecting, photographing and preserving evidence for police investigations.
NOTE:
• Experience may NOT substitute for the educational requirements.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.
