I came across a good article in Wired today regarding the open science revolution. The big idea being that traditional avenues of publication are subject to the stranglehold of academia and pay to play and there are new vehicles out there which make the submission process focus more on editing and survey of method thereby allowing post publication peer review to determine the significance and merits of the paper, which happens anyway even in the current system.

For the record, I like this idea. It seems as though there's a reall 'puppy mill' mentality to publications, even in our own discipline. Sure, they have all their papers and shots, but they also come with an unhealthy predisposition towards hip displaysia which results in you having to put down Old Yeller in front of the kids. (maybe I took the analogy too far there.......... nah)

Senator Issa (R CA) has been trying to pass a bill he sponsored called the Research Works Act H.R. 3699. If passed, the bill would "prohibit federal agencies from conditioning their grants to require that articles reporting on publicly funded research be made accessible to the public online." Naturally the good Senator has received tens of thousands of dollars form the Science, Technology, and Medical publishing industry.
