Hi all,

I am now in charge of training 5 folks to competency in latent prints. Two of them have just started doing comparisons. Though my agency doesn't really document analysis during casework, I am having the trainees take detailed analysis notes. They are having some issues on the difference between slippage and pressure distortion. I can explain it but I don't really have any good images which demonstrate either slippage or pressure distortion (I'm not actively doing casework right now). Does anyone have images they can share?

Alice (Maceo) White's 'Analysis of Distortion in Latent Prints' workbook has a variety of images showing exactly what you're describing.

I'll see what I have but it shouldn't take more than 10-15 min to make your own. A smooth surface and FP powder will do the trick!

Or better yet, have them do it. Then they'll be able to recognize the difference after they've purposely placed the prints with those things in mind.

Alice White's workbook is a great resource. I agree wholeheartedly with Josher though. Having them do it themselves is a great exercise for a training program!

Yes, the class is in Westminster, which is right up the road from us. Unfortunately, we don't currently have the funds to send anyone to the training.
