ZnCl after Ninhydrin
Good Afternoon,
I was just curious as to what formulation of Zinc Chloride labs use that use it after Ninhydrin processing. I have seen some labs use a recipe of just the ZnCl mixed with HFE 7100 and others use a combo of glacial acetic acid, ethanol and heptane. Just seeing how others make it and what works the best.
I just tried the ZnCl mixed with HFE method and I can't get it to work for some reason.

Re: ZnCl after Ninhydrin
We don't use Zinc Chloride on its own very much. The formula we use is:
8g zinc chloride
180 ml ethanol
20 ml glacial acetic acid
100 ml HFE7100, or preferred carrier
This is the same zinc chloride solution we mix with our 1,2 Indanedione. We just received a gallon of Solvantage Final Rinse from brulin (brulin.com). This is supposed to be a replacement for HFE7100. We will be testing it soon. I will post results.

What would the expected advantages be of the Solvantage vs HFE7100?orrb wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 7:03 am We don't use Zinc Chloride on its own very much. The formula we use is:

Cost and availability. I have never liked petroleum ether. The costs of HFE is getting outrageous.

I have always used HFE at any lab I have worked at. You are right though, last time I bought some I think it was around 300-400 per bottle.

Re: ZnCl after Ninhydrin
We have a formula for Zinc Chloride, but also do not use it very much for after ninhydrin. Have found that IND or DFO works better before Nin.
50ml Ethyl Alcohol
10ml Isopropyl Alcohol
10ml Glacial Acetic Acid
6g Zinc Chloride
200ml Novec HFE 7100
Add the first 4 and stir until dissolved. Then add HFE and stir.
