Sequencing a latent with inked handwriting

A current case within our office has posed a question not considered previously. A piece of paper bearing handwriting in ink has been examined with ninhydrin and prints have been developed.
Some of these impressions appear on the paper in the same place as the handwriting. An indication, if possible, of whether the paper was handled as a blank or not may have a bearing on the outcome of the case.
Does anyone know of any way to determine whether the prints were put on the paper over the writing or put there on the blank paper with the writing taking place afterwards?
