I'm trying to get a perspective of our newly established AFIS network by asking how many other areas have multiple AFIS systems interconnected sharing a single database (like the FBI's IAFIS, except on a local or State level).

We recently hooked up 26 Texas counties on a 27,000 square mile network, where each county has it's own individual database and also feeds into a regional 26 county database, sharing all tenprints and latents.

The regional population is about 800,000, which averages one AFIS system per 30,000 people. Our initial starting database consists of about 175,000 tenprint cards (about 21% of the population).

For the AFIS networks and stand-alone systems, and I'd like some feedback on the following:
1. Number of AFIS systems on the network,
2. Regional Population (or ratio of AFIS:Population)
3. Percentage of population's tenprints in your database.

Jason, we do not have separate AFIS sytems. We have one database and two counties are feeding into it. We have 3 agency users on line with a fourth to be added soon.

To answer your questions.

1. Three on line currently.

2. Regional population of the two counties is 1,221,642

3. The percentage of 10-prints on file is 29.5% or approx. 360,000.

The Toronto Police Service is part of the Ontario AFIS Network. The network consists of four neighbouring regional municipalities, each of whom have their own police service. These police services have purchased an AFIS input station (either ten-print or latent), and are submitting images to our database. (It was a cost-saving measure for them, and a benefit for all of us since the 'bad guys' don't respect municipal boundaries).

Be advised that we only have "criminal" fingerprints on our AFIS systems. (Or should I say, the fingerprints of 'accused individuals').

Currently, these are our OAN partners:
(Some of these numbers are a year or two out of date, some are rounded up).

Durham Region - area 1,000 square miles; population 531,000; ten prints on AFIS: 29,000.

Niagara Region - 12 municipalities; 715 square miles; population 427,000.
(Ten prints amalgamed with TPS ten prints -no separate figures available).

Ottawa-Carleton - 11 municipalities, unknown area or population (searched the Web for an hour and couldn't find it!). Ten prints on AFIS: 22,000.

Peterborough/Lakefield - (piggy-backing with Durham Regional Police).
Ten prints on AFIS: 3,000

York Region - 9 municipalities, 1776 square kilometers (you do the math!); population 760,000 (including ME!); ten prints on AFIS: 17,000.

We also have access to the RCMP database, which has fingerprints of accused individuals from across the country.
