Fairfax County Police Department currently has two openings for latent print examiners. One is more of a supervisory type position, while the other is a standard top "bench level" position.

I wish to emphasize that the top salaries listed are NOT the top salaries for the positions. The top salary LISTED is merely the mid-range point. As is generally the case, starting salaries depend on training, education and experience. To begin at a higher salary than that listed, recommendations from our chain of command would bring the subject up for approval by the Fairfax County Board.

The Fingerprint Specialist III position job description is obviously dated and the duties and responsibilities are different than what is listed.

Current plans are underway and ground has been broken for a new forensic facility, where the dynamics and work flow may change even more.

Additionally, as I write this, we are installing a new AFIS system. We have flexible working schedules and have a workout center at our disposal.

We realize that the National Capital region is not the cheapest place to live and work, and traffic gridlock continues to be among the worst in the country. But it has been my experience that my supervisors have worked to make transitions as painless as possible.

Hi Bill,
I'm just curious as to who screens the applications coming in to you all? I am also wondering about the eight years of experience part. Is this unnegotiable? My husband and I are moving to the area in March and I had put my application in. I have been working in latent prints for over 3 years now, have a B. S. and M.S. and I was notified that my application would not forwarded to you all.

The Fairfax County Department of Human Resources screens the applications for certain "critical" criteria, (possibly key words, though I'm not sure). We have little or no control over that process.

Those applications that pass that process are then forwarded to us (my supervisor) for further review. The applicants are then notified (by us, I think, but possibly HR) and the testing and interview notifications are sent out. Background investigation begins after an offer is made to the candidate.

My suggestion is to apply for the Fingerprint Specialist III position if you do not have eight years experience. Positon Number 06-3347
