KING COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Hourly Rate Range: $25.67 – 32.54 (2007 Rates)

WORK LOCATION: Downtown Seattle at the King County Courthouse with travel to the Latent Processing Lab and other locations within King County.
WORK SCHEDULE: Scheduled hours are approximately 8:00 to 4:30, Monday through Friday, but Examiners may be required to assist at crime scenes without advance notice, anytime day or night, 7 days per week, including holidays.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: This is a technical position within the Latent Fingerprint Unit of the King County Sheriff’s Office Regional AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) Section. A thorough knowledge of automated and manual identification methodology is required.
* Locates, processes and preserves prints at crime scenes and on evidence.
* Evaluates latent prints to determine suitability for comparison and possible AFIS input.
* Prepares and enters latent prints into the AFIS computerized databases.
* Determines identification and non-identification by comparison and verification of fingerprints.
* Writes reports on analysis performed and testifies in court as an expert witness regarding methods used and conclusions reached.
* Provides formal and informal training to law enforcement officers concerning proper collection and preservation of physical evidence, which may contain latent prints.
* Trains, assists and directs the work of Identification Technicians in methods and practices of crime scene and evidence processing.
* Takes finger, palm, and footprints from victims of crime, potentially violent suspects and dead bodies.
* Responds in County Crime Scene van to crime scenes in various parts of the County, day or night.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* Two years hands-on experience in fingerprint processing, comparison and identification are required, in addition to technical training.
* Knowledge of safety considerations for handling biohazards and caustic chemicals.
* Knowledgeable in forensic photography.
* Knowledgeable in evidence handling procedures.
* Ability to exercise technically accurate judgment in effecting positive identifications, negative comparisons, or in determining a print is of no value for comparison purposes.
* Ability to give clear, credible and persuasive expert testimony and explain scientific methods and results to an average juror.
* Current in the profession and able to make methodology recommendations through research and participation in advanced training.
* Ability to maintain professional demeanor when in contact with attorneys, court officers, defendants and the public concerning cases involving highly controversial and emotionally-charged issues.
* Ability and commitment to maintain confidentiality.
* Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral report.
* Certification by the IAI as a Latent Print Examiner is very desirable.
* A Bachelor’s degree or higher from accredited college or university with a major in forensic science, criminology, physical science, or related field is also very desirable.
