I am looking for copies of the following articles:

"Fingerprint Identification" from the Identification News October 1967.

and

"The Scar That Disapeared" from the Identification News November 1980.

The IAI CD I have on the first article jumps from page 4 to 13 missing the major portion of the article.

The same with the second article in that the CD jumps from November 1980 page 10 to October 1980 page 11.

Wondering if this is on all the CD's or just mine?

My CD set is exactly the same as yours, Charlie. I searched for the articles you mentioned and found the same errors.

Don't get me wrong. The CD set is very valuable as is, and I use it in my Harry Caldwell research. But there's nothing like holding the actual magazines and flipping through them.

While the old "Identification News" are worth a read, the old "Proceedings" of the conferences are even more fascinating. The IAI published those from the very first meeting up through the late 1950's, and the "Prodeedings" of a conference were basically a verbatim transcript of every word muttered in the lectures and the business meetings. I had the opportunity a number of years ago to peruse a collection of those, which had been saved by an old time examiner I knew, and the reading was fantastic. If the IAI has a set of those old "Prodeedings" in a dusty old box somewhere, they should put them on disk for the members, too. Absolutely fascinating!

Unfortunately, I have not been the pack rat that some have been and I do not have the old issues that might have your articles, Charles. Good luck in your quest.

Thomas, that would be a great idea. I do not know if they are in the possesson of the IAI historian or were transferred to the WV University along with the IAI Library.

As the Historian of the Texas Division of the IAI I have the same thing from 1936 to about 1942. Maybe some later.

At those conferences they actually hired or somehow had a stenographer take the entire conference with presentations, business minutes, etc.

For those that like history like I do it makes for some interesting reading.

Over the years I have seen where people will take their older journals, newsletters etc and just throw them away. Even recently someone I know took the last five years of the JFI and threw them in the trash. A friend up the road from me saw a Lt in a PD take out of storage an original edition of Scotts and an almost unused edition of Bridges and throw them in the trash. They did not stay there long. When I told him they were worthless and the information was outdated and he needed to bring them to me, he kind of look at me weird and muttered something about how friends should not try to take advantage of friends (I would have told him the truth eventually).

When I see that information going in the trash it reminds me of the older TV comercial where trash is thrown out of a car and lands at the feet of an American Native Indian and as he looks up at the camera a tear slids down his cheek.

No one has come up with copies of those two articles yet so I will continue my quest to find them and read them.

You know some people say all that old stuff is rubbish and has no bearing on todays scientific approach. Just some old fogeys sitting around talking about the glory days and sucking oxygen.

Personaly I say that those that do not study history are doomed to repeat it. (Well somebody else said it, I just borrowed it)
