Background
Dallas is the eighth largest city in the United States with a population of over 1.2 million residents. The police department is comprised of over 3,500 sworn officers and 500 non-sworn employees. The Crime Scene Response Section works under the command of the Crimes Against Persons Division and is staffed with both non-sworn and sworn personnel.
Starting salary is based on education and experience.

Duties
A Forensic Fingerprint Expert is a civilian employee of the Police Department who: evaluates latent prints for sufficient ridge detail to compare and individualize; conducts fingerprint comparisons and/or individualizations of suspects, complainants, police, fire personnel, and witnesses; performs and leads others in difficult latent print individualizations requiring a high level of skill; verifies the conclusions of fellow latent examiners; operates and has knowledge of the Texas Department of Public Safety AFIS and FBI IAFIS computer systems as they relate to latent and tenprint inquiries/searches; performs annual purges from the unsolved latent database of those offenses past their statute of limitation; searches all AFIS quality latent fingerprints through AFIS; conducts tenprint AFIS searches to identify suspects arrested by patrol officers, case detectives, and outside law enforcement agencies; responds to all court proceedings in which their presence is required and requested by subpoena where they present expert testimony; trains others in AFIS tenprint and latent operations.
Minimum Qualifications
• Knowledge equivalent to a BS degree from a college or university in a science related to forensic area.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of fingerprint science.
• Knowledge gained from research and practical work experience working in a forensic laboratory.
• In-depth knowledge in testifying as an expert witness in courts of law under Daubert standards.
• Certification as a Latent Print Examiner by the International Association for Identification (IAI) or acquisition of certification prior to completing six-month probationary period.
• Advanced knowledge of forensic computer software applications, laboratory methods and procedures utilized in forensic fingerprinting.
• In-depth knowledge of rules of physical evidence in: criminal law; federal, state and local laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to forensic science; theoretical and analytical principles of natural and physical sciences related to forensic fingerprinting; proper procedures and standard laboratory rules and safety precautions; evidence collection and preservation procedures.
• Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Ability to teach forensic software applications; principles of forensic fingerprinting; operational methods and techniques of forensic laboratory equipment.
• Ability to compile and prepare evidence for presentation in court and provide expert testimony in legal proceedings.
• Ability to review and evaluate new/existing information and analytical techniques for change in protocol.
• Knowledge of Henry and NCIC classification systems.
• Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management, city officials, vendors, other government agencies, other employees and the general public.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of people.

Examination
Candidates for employment will be required to successfully pass, without error, a latent fingerprint examination test.

Prior to being hired, applicants will be required to successfully complete a polygraph and background check.
