Duct tape question

I am working on some dried-out duct tape, trying to get it apart so I can print the adhesive side. The problem is that the silver backing comes up but the string and adhesive parts stay on the surface. The tape was in the sun and heat for a while so I suspect that is what is causing the tape to separate.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Un-du is not helping a bit.
