Processing Cigarettes

Post by M Semler »

Is anyone aware of any studies conducted regarding processing cigarettes (w and w/o filters) for fingerprints? Any information would be helpful.

I am unfortunately not aware of any studies, however, I have seen good results making use of thermoplastic powder (photocopier toner). Good luck.

Processing Cigarettes

Post by Kelly Zirngibl »

I did a small study on smoked cigarette filters in order to determine if DNA would be more successful than latents on cigarette butts. I processed the butts by removing the paper from the filter. Here are the methods of development used:

Visual exam
Inherent Luminescence
Iodine FUming
DFO
Nin
Physical Developer

I did not develope any ridge detail suitable for comparison. The only ridge detail developed was with PD. DFO dissolved the outer coating on filters with the brown pebble like pattern, but was fine on other filters.

Hope this helps.
