The last posts on this topic were from 2005. Now, 5-6 years later, what do people prefer--live scan vs. ink--and why?

#1 -- When major case prints are taken by myself or another latent print examiner who knows how to take good major case prints, I prefer ink.

#2 -- When taken by a jailer or other non-latent print examiner, I prefer live scan.

I agree.

Better detail is recorded by someone who is good at fingerprinting. Mainly thinking of 3rd level.

It's rather academic though, from a policing point of view (not a forensic point of view) the cops love knowing who they have in the cells and what warrants are outstanding etc it saves time and money; so you will never go back again to inking unless on an individual case.

What do you think of some of the new tracing programs that are out now that traces a print in seconds then allows you the options to add manually so that the computer generated trace matches the print you are tracing?

If this question is for me it no doubt relates to another blog, anyway NEC software does just that, the actual question should be how accurate is the software. I do not for a moment believe that computer software is anywhere as accurate as an expert on the average latent print, you may suggest the experts interpretation is too subjective, well that is an opinion, but my opinion is still that I am more accurate.

I was only referring to digital technology as a tool. I will undoubtedly have to agree that you are more accurate than the machine otherwise there would not be an option to edit a trace made by a machine. At least that is my way of thinking about it.

I have come across a piece of software by the name of TraceIT. It is standalone program and has a number of interesting features such as automarking the print, tracing the print, enclosing the outer edges so that points are not recognized by the ridge ending, editing the trace of course and several others. Have you seen this software? Does NEC allow the operator to have these features at their fingertips?
