Digial notes

Post by cpatti »

Our section is looking into going all digital for notes. We will be using JusticeTrax LIMS for simple processing notes, but not for our latent comparison notes. Is anyone already doing all digital notes and willing to share their process? I am looking at Foray systems and DIMS (Linear Systems) potentially.

I developed a database called 'Latent Information File Tracker' (LIFT) that can do what you're asking (with the exception of digital signatures) using only Microsoft Office. However, you could easily add digital signatures to these if you wanted.

It's free and open source.

Having developed our LIMS from the ground up, I can tell you that if you prototype what you want in an access database that you'll save your agency time, money and headache.

LIMS generally come in two flavors:
1) Tell us what you want and we'll build it.
2) Adapt to the workflow of the prefab LIMS.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses but once you implement, a change order to add/fix/revise their functionality is not quick, easy or cheap. Prototyping in MS Access can allow you to actually test the workflow, the reports and can ultimately act as the basis for a Product Requirements Document if you choose to put out a bid for a system.

Hope it helps!
