Oil Red O

A year ago there was a very interesting article in the JFI that was titled "Oil Red O Versus Physical Developer on Wet Papers: A Comparative Study". The authors were Anissa Rawji and Alexandre Beaudoin and it was in JFI 56(1) Jan-Feb, 2006, pp 33-54.

I thought this was a very good article and I am wondering has anyone put it into use as a standard processing techinque or has anyone done any followup studies that would agree or disagree with Rawji and Beaudoin.

I am thinking about using it on a couple of serious cold cases and I am looking at feed back on its use. Feed back being pros or cons.

I have not experimented with the technique, but I might suggest that you try posting your question also on the Canadian Identification Society board... www.cis-sci.ca ..... ( there may be a registration process ).

Monsieur Beaudoin is an Executive member of the CIS and I've had some discussions with him on that site in the past. I'm sure he would be pleased to see feedback regarding his article.

Mr. Parker,

We tried ORO shortly after mr. Beaudoin published his article in the JFI 54(4) july/august 2004 issue (p. 413-421). The tests we did convinced us this technique is more easy to use and prepare than PD and gives a better quality.

I doubt if we have any reports of these tests in English, but I if you're interested, I'll check.

Terry, thanks for the follow up. I contacted Monsieur Beaudoin who was out last week but sent me a bunch of information today.

Other people have sent some information with one sending a validation study. Everything has been very positive about it. So much so that I am putting together a validation study for my agency.

For those that might be interested in a method for wet paper items, besides PD or those that want an additional process along with PD then I think you should read up and study about ORO.

I have some 10-15 year old documents that I am curious in how ORO will work. I will let you know.

Mr. Volckeryck, from what you have said plus the information that I received from Monsieur Beaudoin I think that will be enough. Your positive testament to ORO is enough.

One of my Honours students (Joanne Salama) at the University of Technology, Sydney has just completed a 6-month study on Oil Red O vs PD on various surfaces. This includes some attempts to reformulate (as the formula appears to be quite unstable), selectivity studies, aging studies etc. I will shortly present this material at the International Fingerprint Research Group (IFRG) meeting to be held in Canberra, Australia.

I will also prepare a paper for publication soon.
