Challenges to fingerprinting

Post by Iain McKie »

As the judicial enquiry approaches I remain extremely interested in the challenges being made to fingerprint evidence worldwide.

While I have always been a supporter of your science as a major crime prevention and detection tool I have also been critical at the failure of major fingerprint organisations like the IAI , Fingerprint Society and the CRFP in the UK to respond to some of the challenges thrown up by cases like the SCRO debacle.

While the latest challenge by Simon Cole is balanced by the news from two American courts that previous rulings against fingerprints have been overcome the danger continues to be that where Scottish experts have sought to cover up two erroneous identifications the profession is storing up trouble for the future by burying its official head in the sand.

As always my thanks to all experts who have supported Shirley over the years.
