“distortion – dissimilarity”

I visited the “distortion – dissimilarity” section and find in fascinating. However, why is there no other input from the examiners posting these images? What were their conclusions / comments. Why are the prints “cropped.” Why not show the entire print?

Very good question - I was looking for some information on those myself -as a learning tool. . .I try to visit the "close calls" fairly often, and would love to see more explanations - as some would "throw me for a loop"

Is there anybody out there who is able to explain the latest posting on DISTORTION? or DISSIMILARITY? I am unable to view the actual size images so am unable to make a full comparison, however, on the face of it the two cropped images are worlds apart and the question of distorted does not even enter the equation. Am I missing something

Dear Ian, the second one on "Distortion vs Dissimilarity" is my submission.

They are two inked prints that came in on arrest cards some time apart (I do not remember the length of time apart).

If you look at the one on the left there is a light color change that runs from the top to the bottom on left third of the print. This is where the ridges have shifted (slipped).

What I believe has happened is the ridges on the left side shifted three ridges up on the left side causing the distortion. If you look at the right two thirds you will see about 15+ ridge characteristics of the same type, direction, location, and relationship. On the left side you can actually observe about 5-6 ridge characteristics that correspond to the left side of the other exemplar print.

If you print it out, and cut the left third off and move it you will be able to see the alignment.

I, like Ian was unable to see the full image, but have since been able to access the full images. This will be one to explain in court!
