Finger Rock

Post by Charles Parker »

A couple of weeks ago it was a real nice Friday so on the way home I decided to do some rock hunting, so I headed for one of may favorite cuts and on the way there I remembered a small road cut that I have never searched so I decided to stop there and look first.

One of the first rocks I saw was the following. I call it a finger rock. Now it not really like a fingerprint but it is as close as I have found. You can see some bifurcations, and ending ridges. I think I would classify it as a tented arch or an accidental whorl.

Also I believe it is ‘Unique’ or ‘Not Duplicated In It’s Most Minute Detail’. Image that! It may not be permanent once I throw it in the tumbler.

Now watch someone will ‘Morph’ a fingerprint on a real rock! (Photo-Shop Fake)

Karen, actually the dark brown bands are quite hard, about 6.5-7 on the Mohs hardness scale. It is probably a type of Chalcedony or Chert. It might have been sandstone at one time but pressure has compacted the crystal structure.

But back to fingerprints now.

Just before we do, your post brought back some good memories of my gem and mineral collection days...Thanks!
Make a difference day by day, case by case. If you don't make a difference you don't count.
