Hi,
I'm looking for some pattern frequency statistics. I already have statistics produced by the Metropolitan Police (London) in 1989 using a database of approximately 4 million, some originating from Canada in 1993 using a database of 26 million and those printed in 'Fingerprint and Other Ridge Skin Impressions'. Does anyone have any more current figures or any produced using a larger database?

We did a small localized research project using about 2000 records and got approximately the same results as those offered in Champod's book. I know of none more recent than Champod's though.

If you were to obtain this from a data base in the Pacific Islands you would have a very high whorl count and if the data base was from northern Europe I would imagine there would be a high count of arches involved. It really comes down to your local arrest rates I imagine. London obviously would have a massive mix of races and your data base will have limited relevance to us in NZ.
For all that however it is a very interesting topic. I remember reading a study done at a NZ Uni by someone who came in from China or Korea about this very topic, he came up with some very interesting studies, even if his conclusions were questionable (in fact we had good laugh at his expense). It appears that back in the 1930s or there about, there was a lot of work in this area in the Pacific Islands, showing very high or even exclusively whorl patterns amongst the populations of the Islands. Samoa is of interest as it has in the past been a German territory and as a result there are a high percentage of arches in their population, although looking at them they have no look of the German race among them, you do not see blue eyed blonds running around except for the Tourists. What does that say about the Master Race?
Recent DNA studies show that these people from the Pacific came from Taiwan originally. Their language is even similar. There were stories from WW2 prison camps of the NZ Maori learning Japanese very quickly because it was so similar to the Maori language, resulting in the English soldiers not trusting the Maori in some cases.
