Pores On A Latent

Post by Ann Horsman »

Nice detail on a powdered only latent. Probably the best I have seen for clean, distinct pores.

Hi Ann,

My favourite subject so it would be uncharacteristic if I didnt respond. Can I ask two things Ann if you could help me out, please annotate what you are calling as 'pores' and please post the source skin if known. When I first saw the latent I thought is was Y7, phew glad that isnt raising its head. From an interest point of view if we look at the core of the loop and count from the centre out 6 or 7 ridges to the top left ( 11 o'clock) it can be observed that these two ridges have a fine black line running down the middle of the ridge. The physical reality is that the skin morphology contains a small groove in this area preventing it fully contacting the substrate. The development medium has also not filled the groove either side of the ridge matrix. So we are left with a void along the surface of the ridge that runs in line with the locations of the sweat duct openings. Other examples of the same feature exist in the latent so it is a prominent part of the skin surface morpholgy. My last research paper names this feature as the Primary Ridge Surface Groove. Subject to some copyright imaging, peer review and publication it should be out next year. Ann have you observed this feature in other latents and exemplars and source skin? Cheers from oz. Les

Les,

I think my brain has a different contrast bias from yours; I see black ridges with large white pores on the first three ridges to the right of the core. That would make your fine black lines incipient ridges.

Ann,

Which of us is right. Black ridges or white?

Hi David,

Your viewpoint could be correct as I took the observation that the substrate was uneven and used the white ridges as being normal ridge width and separation. If they are black ridges then the observation about the surface groove doesnt hold true. If that is the case then I guess its up to me to provide a good example of what Ive asked Ann to comment on. Shouldnt be too hard as I see the feature with almost every fingerprint and certainly on source skin such as my own. Cheers from oz. Les

Hi Guys,

The ridges are black, it is not a very good latent. Ridges are minimal over all but the pores were outstanding.

I will post a picture of ridges I recently developed on a plastic grocery bag using cyanoacrylate fuming/basic yellow staining AFTER black mag FP powder (the bag was fumed prior to the mag powder application). I couldn't believe the pore details.

Not quite as nice as those posted by Dennis but allow me to show a nice one I found lately - with powder only - very visible during initial visual examination and subsequently dusted very carefully...had a helluva time driving 30 miles on some ugly unpaved road back to the office without damaging it

With one or two quick and rough CS 2 tricks

P.S.

If possible / allowed I would appreciate it if someone would be able and willing to search this through one of your local AFIS / IAFIS systems and I would be more than willing to return the favour on this side with one or more of your latents.

Feel free to contact me for detail and/or hi-res image files.

Thanks,

Anton
