AAAS Conference

Post by Boyd Baumgartner »

There was a conference about a week ago put on by the AAAS in cooperation with NIST and the Innocence Project that you can view at the following link:

The topic: 10 Years post-NAS, what's transpired?

Do you have a TL;DR version?

Everyone thought the report would have had a greater impact than it did. The reason? Everyone is accusing everyone else of being afraid of science.

So, basically it's an appeal to the authority of science which, ironically is not scientific.

Just be more sciencey, guys! (A theme echoed in the latest JFI commentary about testimony)

And I thought wearing a lab coat to court would make it better!

Just don't wear a police uniform. Appears biasing. Very unscientific.

I recall at the time thinking it was a good first step, but changes would take decades. The DoJ Guide on Eyewitness ID came out in 1999 -- twenty years later many states and departments haven't adopted even the most basic recommendations and remain hostile to change.

The justice system is a vast, unwieldy beast, with strong incentives to keep things as they are and have (in the eyes of the main actors) always been. I think there is a point about a fundamental lack of understanding of science and scientific principles among some of the main actors, a lack of resources for training, and a strong anti-science/anti-authority mood in parts of the populace.
