The three day symposium, the first of its kind in the country, will be designed for professionals engaged in various fields of personal identification, including crime scene investigators, fingerprint examiners, latent print examiners, researchers and university academicians.
The aim of the symposium is to discuss the latest developments in the field of fingerprints such as visualization of latent fingerprints, AFIS and third level details in fingerprints and training and quality in fingerprints examination.
Internationally renowned scientists are expected to attend the symposium for plenary lectures as well as for oral presentations.
ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
Personal identification from fingerprints is one the most important aspects of Forensic Science. Though basic principles of this technique remain unchanged, many new tools have been developed to facilitate the process of identification. Some of these developments occur so fast that it is difficult for laboratory professionals to keep updated with these developments.
The aim of the symposium is to provide an opportunity to bring together the scientific community involved in the various aspect of personal identification through fingerprints, as well as to share and discuss the various advances in this field. The symposium will be attended by internationally renowned scientists.

It is a great honor for us that Prof. J. Almog, a leading forensic chemist and former Director of DIFS, Israel Police Force, Jerusalem, has so kindly agreed to coordinate this symposium at an international level.
The Symposium will cover the following areas:
1. Advances in latent fingerprint visualization
2. Classification of fingerprints and use of AFIS
3. Use of third level details in personal identification
4. Use of Poroscopy in AFIS
5. Training and quality assurance

ABOUT THE HOST DEPARTMENT
The subject of forensic science was introduced into the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes at Punjabi University in 1974. It is the second university in the country and the first in the northern region to have a full fledged department of Forensic Science. Since then, more than 40 students have been awarded Ph.D. degrees, and seats for M.Sc. students have increased, with demand continuously growing. The department is being approached by students from all over India, as well as other countries in the world such as Malaysia, Nigeria and Mauritius.
The academic curriculum for the course is of very high level and is modified constantly with the changing needs and developments in the subject.
Since its inception, the department has organized a number of national and international conferences, seminars, and symposia as well as a SAARC work-shop on Forensic Science in 1995, and refresher courses. In 2004, a five-day workshop on facial re-construction was held and in 2006, a symposium on computer forensics was organized.
ABOUT THE HOST UNIVERSITY
Punjabi University, Patiala is a 5 star university accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a sprawling campus spreading over more than 300 acres. The university was established in 1962 and within a short period of time has advanced to its present state. Its imposing buildings in a lush, green, pollution free environment are the land-mark of Patiala, the city of gardens. A rich library with more than 4.25 lac books and a majestic reading hall are open 360 days a year, from 0815 to 2015 hrs. A separate air-conditioned hall for the use of personal books, and a reading room, are provided on the ground floor of the library. Patiala is located in the south-eastern part of Punjab, between 29o 49’ and 30o 47’ north altitude, and 75o 58’ and 76o 54’ east altitude. It was established in 1763 by Baba Ala Singh who laid the foundation to Qila Mubarak, the Patiala fort around which the present city is built.
Patiala is well connected to Delhi, the capital of India, by road and rail. It is 250 kms from Delhi (approximately 4 hrs journey). The university campus is situated on the Patiala-Delhi Road, 7 kms before Patiala city.

INTERNATIONAL COORDINATOR
Joseph Almog is a Professor of Forensic Chemistry at Casali Institute for Applied Chemistry, Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is renowned in the field of fingerprints, and a re-cipient of the highly prestigious Lucas Medal, awarded to him by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences at the 17th meeting of International Association of Forensic Sciences in Hong Kong, 2005. Professor Almog was invited to join the Israeli National Crime Lab in 1974, while doing his Post doctoral research at MIT, USA.
One of the most important projects, which he conducted in his new capacity, was to design novel chemicals that combined with tiny amounts of amino acids found in secretions from glands on fingers and palms. It was a completely new approach to forensic science - one that was subsequently adopted in other laboratories throughout the world.
Prof. Almog directed the Forensic Science Unit of the Israel Police Force for 16 years, concentrating on generating a battery of specially designed 'detective' chemicals to be used in the identification of criminal activity. He retired from the Police Force as Brigadier-General.
Prof. Almog returned to academic life, when in 2000 he was invited to establish a forensic chemistry research group at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This group conducts research in close collaboration with his former unit at the police Force.
